The fastest sailing ships in the world were built between 1850 and 1880. Due to the gold rush in California and the high tea prices in England, shipowners commissioned the construction of ever faster and more extreme ships. It was the great time of the clipper ships. Captains were racing for the shortest passages. In order not to lose speed, all sails were set even in heavy seas, water hit the deck and often parts of the masts and sails were damaged. With this picture I would like to put you into this time and hope you like my (slightly romantic) representation of a clipper in heavy sea.
