Description
Anyone who has ever been in Venice along the Grand Canal by boat was certainly just as excited as I was, by the incredible beauty and extraordinary architecture of the palaces. Incredible shine and glitter with its white mamor facade in the sun. It is called the Golden House, the Ca d'Oro. Venice was the richest and one of the largest cities in Europe in the early Middle Ages (population in 1300: London-100,000, Venice-110,000). Venetian merchants had the monopoly of trade in rare spices, incense, precious stones and magnificent fabrics from the Orient and Asia. The city was attracted to skilled craftsmen, architects, painters and sculptors who could realize their skills and talents in the many churches and palaces. Even today famous painters like Titian, Tiepolo, Tintoretto and Guardi and sculptors like Corradini , Bellini or Canova worked in Venice.
The Ca d'Oro Palace was built between 1428 and 1430 for the Contarini family, who provided Venice with eight Doges between 1043 and 1676 . The architects of Ca d'Oro were Giovanni Bon and his son Bartolomeo Bon.
After the fall of the Republic of Venice in 1797, the palace changed hands several times. In 1846 Alessandro Trubetzkoi bought the palace, which was in a ruinous state, as a gift for the ballet dancer Marie Taglioni . The architect's reckless renovation led to his arrest for vandalism. In the end, many of the Gothic elements were removed, including the staircase of the courtyard and the balconies overlooking the courtyard. In 1894 the palace was acquired by its last owner, Baron Giorgio Franchetti ; during his life he gathered an important art collection and personally supervised its extensive restoration, including the reconstruction of the staircase and the cosmataean courtyard with antique marble. In 1916, Franchetti bequeathed the Ca' d'Oro to the Italian state. It is now open to the public as a gallery: Galleria Giorgio Franchetti alla Ca' d'Oro.
According to tradition, when the palace was completed, large parts of the facade of the palace were gilded or painted with the color ultramarine (which was more expensive than gold at that time). In my picture I tried to show the original beauty of the palace and hope you like it.

Vielen Dank, liebe Petra. Venedig ist auch heute noch atemberaubend schön! :)
