Description
In the night, when the city is sleeping, she likes to roam in the narrow lanes by the canals. Her mistresses are the Italian-Russian adopted daughter of the rich Marchese Maruzzi, Agathe Alginovich and German painter Friedrich Nehrlich. Friedrich was born 1807 in Erfurt. He grew up in Hamburg. 1820 in the age of 22 he was invited by his patron Baron von Rumohr to travel to Italy. The rugged beauty of the Alps and th mediterranean Italy made a great impression on him. Arriving in Rome, his uncommonly cheerful nature brimming with wit and merriment, made him soon to an favorite body of the Rome's German artist community. To make it easier for the italian lingue, he changed his name to Friedrich Nerly, and later to Frederico Nerly. He lives in Rome for abaout 7 years, where he traveled to Naples, Amalfi and Sicily. Countless sketches and paintings had been created at this period. Feeling homesick he wanted to return to Germany. Then in 1840 he planned his way home via Florence, Milan and Venice. Arriving in Venice, he was completely overwhelmed by this beautiful unique city and decided to stay. The association of many great artists and craftsmen were his inspiration and furtheron the impetus to create great works of art. The rich society of Venice was obsessed by art, so it was not too difficult to sell his great paintings. He was hit by Cupid's arrow, he felt in love with Venetian Agathe Alginovich and they got married later on. She was the adopted daughter of the very rich and powerful Marchese Maruzzi (who was also Russian ambassador in Venice for a time). Hence the German artist became the Venetian Frederico Nerly. He made only a few journeys back to his homeland in northern Germany, and lived and worked in Venice until his death in 1878. Today his beautiful paintings are sold at auctions, some of then had been sold for several hundred thousand dollars. They are the most beautiful artworls next to the works of Canaletto and Francesco Lazzaro Guardi.
What does all this have to do with this cat - you may ask? Nothing, I don't know if Frederick and Agathe owned a cat. When you walk through Venice every stone is full of history. You can imagine how people lived, loved and worked in earlier years.
The biography (in short form) is true and since we (me and my great love) ourselves are still in love with Venice today, we can understand the life path of Nerly well. Again and again I am tempted to make this incredible city a motif in my pictures. I also do not want to miss to greet our Venetian friends!
